EMEL: Energy Management in Metropolitan eMobility-Charging Infrastructures

The extensive use of electric vehicles in metropolitan regions faces the same dilemma as electric vehicles in general: it needs a developed charging infrastructure to stimulate the use of electric vehicles and vice versa.

Project begin: 01 April, 2019

The project aims to define and develop the technical requirements necessary to integrate modular charging stations for electric vehicles into a heterogeneous metropolitan energy production and charging infrastructure. This would be applied to the following scenarios: smart home (self-produced energy, V2B, C2C), smart factory (charging at work, corporate energy management) and smart grid.

EMEL seeks to create and implement a prototype system solution for the integration of individual charging stations or charging infrastructures into metropolitan energy management systems.

Structure of the overall system

Three relevant scenarios are addressed (see figure, left to right):

  • Integration vehicle/charging station/smart home
  • Integration vehicle/charging station/smart grid
  • Integration vehicle/charging station/smart factory

Why is this project especial?

The focus of the project lies on the connection between the charging station and the energy grid: the development of an energy management system for smart charging.
